Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to the arts from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself by means of the medium of art. Although DuVernay grew up within Compton with her family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was inspired to create a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get interested in production for the broadcast media. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury, and then examine their junk. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency.
